The Brazilian shot-stopper has completely transformed Manchester City’s approach this season. His commanding displays lift the entire defence and he even poses an attacking threat from goal.
Another player who has been sensational this season. Walker has proven so many people wrong with his thrilling form this season. Not many rival fans are quoting his price-tag anymore.
When fit he is perhaps the best central defender in English football. Effortlessly reads the game and is the perfect defensive partner for Nicolas Otamendi. Invaluable experience which will be crucial at Anfield.
It’s hard to believe just how far the Argentine has come this season. There were doubts over his suitability at the start of the campaign, but the 30-year-old has continued to progress into a leading Premier League defender.
Hard to judge just how good the new signing is yet, but he’s certainly shown glimpses at times. Looked very good against Everton at left back on Saturday.
So crucial to this City side – the glue that binds the team together. Adds a determined grit required on big European nights – and given Liverpool’s attacking threat, will have his hands full shielding defence.
Simply a joy to watch. The Spaniard continues to dominate English football in his own unique and modest manner. Possesses the world-class ability to play the game at his own pace.
De Bruyne 9.5
The main man for City this season, and the one player who really steps up on the big occassions. The perfect marriage of flair and determination which sets him apart from anyone else in England.
We’re still yet to see the very best from Bernardo in a blue shirt but he has progressed leaps and bounds since the turn of the New Year. A beautiful player to watch who possesses a footballing intelligence which could prove essential.
A constant goal threat with 12 goals this season despite an injury-plagued campaign. Often preferred in the big games and has a talent of drifting wide and opening up pockets of space between defences.
Unstoppable on his day and probably City’s best performer during their last trip to Anfield. His lighting pace will be crucial on the break and he has the attacking brilliance to terrify the Liverpool defence and restrict their own pushes forward.
Remains to be seen if he can establish himself as the long-term number one for Liverpool. Has kept clean sheets in half his games this season and is starting to find confidence.
Sane’s eyes will have lit up when he saw how easily Wilfried Zaha tormented the youngster over the weekend.
Van Dijk 7.5
Already solidifying a shaky Liverpool defence. City refused to meet Southampton’s £75m asking price. Will he make a statement in this tie?
How he performs could define his future at the club. Has never really established himself and looks like an obvious weak link at the heart of defence. If City get in full flow it could be a very uncomfortable night for him.
A contender for the signing of the season and is a real fan-favourite amongst the Anfield faithful. Technically gifted and has the intelligence to know when to join in with attacks.
Often preferred in the big games this season, but still hasn’t really done much to impress for Jurgen Klopp’s side. In decent form for the side, but can go missing when his side aren’t on top.
The England international is one booking away from a suspension – that could play on his mind over this tie.
A solid performer in midfield and a player City fans will know all about. Works tirelessly in the middle of the pitch and will be crucial in upsetting the rhythm of the match.
Simply put, he is one of the best players in world football – so good he could even make the City team. An endless attacking threat and looks like he can find the back of the net every time he picks the ball up.
Another player who is really enjoying the freedom under Klopp this season. Scoring goals regularly and has energy in abundance. Capable of stretching the defence and gives Liverpool a killer touch on the break.
A frightening prospect when he is on form and capable of tearing any defence apart. Caused all sorts of problems when the two sides met at Anfield and was famously sent off in the first league meeting of the season.
