How to Block Disposable Email Addresses in WordPress

September 2, 2016 by Leave a Comment

Recently, one of our readers asked if it’s possible to block disposable email addresses in WordPress? Disposable email addresses are temporary email accounts used by spammers to create fake WordPress accounts. In this article, we will show you how to effectively block disposable email addresses in WordPress. What are Disposable Email Addresses and Why Block Them in WordPress Most websites require an email address to create user accounts. This allows website owners to verify accounts by sending them a link to that email address. Spammers found a workaround to that requirement in shape of disposable emails. These temporary email accounts are available for a short duration allowing spammers to verify an account. If you run a WordPress membership site or allow user registration , then people can use those disposable email accounts to create fake user accounts on your website. Announcing WordPress 1.5

February 17, 2005 by Leave a Comment

(This is my favorite part of what I do.) To the 12,126 of you who have already downloaded WordPress 1.5, congrats for being on the ball. We had a “soft launch” on Monday the 14 th while we worked out some infrastructure issues and we’re now very ready to announce WordPress 1.5 to the world. This release is named “Strayhorn” in honor of Billy Strayhorn the pianist and sublime composer who worked closely with Duke Ellington and wrote tunes like “Take the A Train” and “Lush Life.” We thought he was perfect to represent the power and elegance of this release, which has been under intense development and testing the past few months. If you’re ready to get right to the meat, go download WordPress and don’t forget to read the installation or upgrade instructions. If you’d like to know more about the release, please make yourself comfortable and read on, we’ve got a lot to share. 1.5 has been our most user-focused development ever: we’ve listened closely to your requests, … [Read more...] about Announcing WordPress 1.5

How to Keep WordPress Secure

September 5, 2009 by Leave a Comment

A stitch in time saves nine. I couldn’t sew my way out of a bag, but it’s true advice for bloggers as well — a little bit of work on an upgrade now saves a lot of work fixing something later. Right now there is a worm making its way around old, unpatched versions of WordPress. This particular worm, like many before it, is clever: it registers a user, uses a security bug (fixed earlier in the year) to allow evaluated code to be executed through the permalink structure, makes itself an admin, then uses JavaScript to hide itself when you look at users page, attempts to clean up after itself, then goes quiet so you never notice while it inserts hidden spam and malware into your old posts. The tactics are new, but the strategy is not. Where this particular worm messes up is in the “clean up” phase: it doesn’t hide itself well and the blogger notices that all his links are broken, which causes him to dig deeper and notice the extent of the damage. Where worms of old would do childish … [Read more...] about How to Keep WordPress Secure

WordPress 2.7 “Coltrane”

December 11, 2008 by Leave a Comment

The first thing you’ll notice about 2.7 is its new interface. From the top down, we’ve listened to your feedback and thought deeply about the design and the result is a WordPress that’s just plain faster. Nearly every task you do on your blog will take fewer clicks and be faster in 2.7 than it did in a previous version. ( Download it now , or read on for more.) Next you’ll begin to notice the new features subtly sprinkled through the new interface: the new dashboard that you can arrange with drag and drop to put the things most important to you on top, QuickPress, comment threading, paging, and the ability to reply to comments from your dashboard, the ability to install any plugin directly from WordPress.org with a single click, and sticky posts. Digging in further you might notice that every screen is customizable. Let’s say you never care about author on your post listings — just click “Screen Options” and uncheck it and it’s instantly gone from the page. The same for any … [Read more...] about WordPress 2.7 “Coltrane”
