People of WordPress: Robert Cheleuka

January 25, 2020 by Leave a Comment

You’ve probably heard that WordPress is open-source software, and may know that it’s created and run by volunteers. WordPress enthusiasts share many examples of how WordPress changed people’s lives for the better. This monthly series shares some of those lesser-known, amazing stories. Meet Robert Cheleuka Robert is a self-taught graphic and motion designer turned web designer (and aspiring web developer) from Malawi, Africa. Over the years, he has grown fond of WordPress and has become a loyal user. Still, the journey is rough. Malawi Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world. A tiny landlocked country with a population of 17 million, it’s largely rural and still considered a developing country. The average entry-level monthly pay for most skilled jobs is about $110. Global WordPress Translation Day 3

September 27, 2017 by Leave a Comment

On September 30 2017, the WordPress Polyglots Team – whose mission is to translate WordPress into as many languages as possible – will hold its third Global WordPress Translation Day , a 24-hour, round-the-clock, digital and physical global marathon dedicated to the localisation and internationalisation of the WordPress platform and ecosystem, a structure that powers, today, over 28% of all existing websites. The localisation process allows for WordPress and for all WordPress-related products (themes and plugins) to be available in local languages, so to improve their accessibility and usage and to allow as many people as possible to take advantage of the free platform and services available. In a (not completely) serendipitous coincidence, September 30 has also been declared by the United Nations “International Translation Day”, to pay homage to the great services of translators everywhere, one that allows communication and exchange. The event will feature a series of … [Read more...] about Global WordPress Translation Day 3

Save the Date: May 27

April 11, 2013 by Leave a Comment

What’s on May 27, you ask? May 27, 2013 is the 10th anniversary of the first WordPress release ! We think this is worth celebrating, and we want WordPress fans all over the world to celebrate with us by throwing their own parties. We’re using Meetup Everywhere to coordinate, and will be putting up a website just for the 10th Anniversary so that we can collect photos, videos, tweets, and posts from all the parties. The rules are very simple: Pick a place to go where a bunch of people can be merry — a park, a bar, a backyard, whatever Spread the word to local meetups, tech groups, press, etc and get people to say they’ll come to your party If 50 or more people RSVP to your party, we’ll try to send you some WordPress stickers and buttons Have party attendees post photos, videos, and the like with the #wp10 hashtag We’ll be using Meetup Everywhere to coordinate parties all over the world, so get your city on the map and register your party now ! We’ll follow … [Read more...] about Save the Date: May 27
