How to Block Disposable Email Addresses in WordPress

September 2, 2016 by Leave a Comment

Recently, one of our readers asked if it’s possible to block disposable email addresses in WordPress? Disposable email addresses are temporary email accounts used by spammers to create fake WordPress accounts. In this article, we will show you how to effectively block disposable email addresses in WordPress. What are Disposable Email Addresses and Why Block Them in WordPress Most websites require an email address to create user accounts. This allows website owners to verify accounts by sending them a link to that email address. Spammers found a workaround to that requirement in shape of disposable emails. These temporary email accounts are available for a short duration allowing spammers to verify an account. If you run a WordPress membership site or allow user registration , then people can use those disposable email accounts to create fake user accounts on your website. You can block spam user registrations using different plugins. However by blocking disposable … [Read more...] about How to Block Disposable Email Addresses in WordPress

WordPress 1.5 Developers’ Primer

February 28, 2005 by Leave a Comment

WordPress 1.5 is not just cool and suave on the outside, there are quite a few programming enhancements and added features for coders, hackers, plugin developers and enthusiasts. Some of these are obvious while others are more difficult to track down without digging through the code. This is a highly technical post, so feel free to skip it if that’s not your bag. Transparent serializing and deserializing of objects and arrays when using add, update, and get_option. So for example, consider the following code: $this = array(array(), blah, blah, blah); update_option('xfnbl_data', $this); $newthis = get_option('xfnbl_data'); The update_option function will transparently serialize the data. If you save an option as an array, the option is returned as an array. If you update_option an option that doesn’t exist, it’ll create it : If the option did not exist when it was updated, it is created transparently. If the option did not exist when it was requested using … [Read more...] about WordPress 1.5 Developers’ Primer

WordPress On The Go

February 17, 2010 by Leave a Comment

I like to moderate comments when I’m waiting for something: a checkout clerk to help me, the dentist to call me back to the office, a soy chai to be made. I don’t lug my laptop everywhere I go,* so I love it that we have mobile apps that make this possible. I don’t know of any other blogging platform that has mobile apps for iPhone, Android and Blackberry. Do you? The iPhone app is up to version 2.2 (note that iPhone app version numbers do not correlate to WordPress core versions, due to separate dev cycles), while the Android and Blackberry apps are brand new. You can write posts (save drafts or publish right away), moderate comments, blog photos from your phone (and video on Blackberry!**), and more. Check out the glory that is mobile WordPress in the image below: “But what about my Nokia,” you ask? Raanan Bar-Cohen, who oversees the mobile projects, recently announced: “We are very excited to share with all of you that in the coming weeks we’ll be opening up a … [Read more...] about WordPress On The Go

How to Keep WordPress Secure

September 5, 2009 by Leave a Comment

A stitch in time saves nine. I couldn’t sew my way out of a bag, but it’s true advice for bloggers as well — a little bit of work on an upgrade now saves a lot of work fixing something later. Right now there is a worm making its way around old, unpatched versions of WordPress. This particular worm, like many before it, is clever: it registers a user, uses a security bug (fixed earlier in the year) to allow evaluated code to be executed through the permalink structure, makes itself an admin, then uses JavaScript to hide itself when you look at users page, attempts to clean up after itself, then goes quiet so you never notice while it inserts hidden spam and malware into your old posts. The tactics are new, but the strategy is not. Where this particular worm messes up is in the “clean up” phase: it doesn’t hide itself well and the blogger notices that all his links are broken, which causes him to dig deeper and notice the extent of the damage. Where worms of old would do childish … [Read more...] about How to Keep WordPress Secure
